Building Custom KPIs

Overview

Every line of data in Castaway is accessible through Custom KPIs, allowing you to deliver tailor-made insights and powerful monitoring tools to your team and clients. This article covers:

Creating an Account Monitor KPI

Account Monitor KPIs track an individual line from your accounts or Driver data.

1. Go to KPIs > Setup tab.
2. Click the green plus icon.
3. Select Create an Account Monitor KPI.
4. Name your KPI and select the account or Driver you wish to track in the right-hand toolbar.
5. Click Track Account to finalise your KPI.
6. To lock in any changes made in the Setup tab you must click Save KPIs.
7. Once created, consider updating the Higher / Lower setting, Total Type and % Display.

Creating a Formula KPI

Formula KPIs use the Castaway formula builder to create custom calculations and monitor performance.

1. Go to KPIs > Setup tab.
2. Click the green plus icon at the top of any Category table.
3. Select Create a Formula KPI.
4. Name your Formula KPI and build your formula.
5. Click Save to finalise your KPI.
6. To lock in any changes made in the Setup tab you must click Save KPIs.
7. Once created, consider updating the Higher / Lower setting, Total Type and % Display.

Using the KPI Formula Builder

1. Name your Formula KPI.
2. To input data into your formula, select the origin under the Add Data right-hand panel: Project KPIs to point to other KPIs, or Forecast Data for all your financial data and Drivers.
3. Expand each section to view all the data lines, double-clicking to bring it into the formula.
4. Under the Forecast Data source, entire sections can be selected, also by double-clicking.
5. Click any of the mathematical functions to insert them into the formula.
6. Bring in numerical values by typing them into the Values box, or using the up and down arrows, then confirm the value by hitting Enter or clicking the green plus button.
7. Castaway will tell you if your formula is mathematically cogent and valid, at which point it will be saveable. To remove any component of the formula click the cross in its corner.

KPI Categories

Categories in KPIs allow you to group and organise your Custom KPIs, much like the Inbuilt KPIs. Ordering your KPIs within a Category is the best way to illustrate the story of your financial and non-financial data. Drag and drop any KPI or Category to reorder using the icon in the far left column.

Organising your KPIs into categories also brings benefits when publishing. When adding a KPI widget to a Dashboard or a KPI table to a Storyboard, the entire Category table can be selected as a unit and will include your Category title.

To add a KPI Category:

1. Go to KPIs > Setup tab
2. Click the blue plus sign
3. Input your Category Title and click the green tick
4. To lock in any changes made in the Setup tab you must click Save KPIs
